WordPress Social Ring 1.1.2 – Shortcode

Versions 1.0.x allowed users to place Google, Facebook and Twitter buttons before or after post content. Version 1.1.0 introduced a template tag which can be used inside the theme to show buttons on a custom position. Now the choice has been completed with a shortcode: you can show social buttons in the middle of the text!

In the post editor you have to insert the shortcode

[socialring]

in the desired position inside the post. The plugin will replace it with the code of social buttons when users vist the page, as you can see just below.

 

The update also fixes a bug with Internet Explorer 8.

    Hi Niccolo,

    After I install Social Ring, if I deactivate it (or uninstall it) the regular Facebook Like button isn’t displayed properly.
    This button is separate from Social Ring. I include it in a Text:link widget with the following code:

    In other words, Social Ring needs to be active (even with no option checked) for this code to work.

    However, an independant Twitter button still works without Social Ring. The code is the following:

      Social Ring has no effects on the blog when it’s deactivated or uninstalled. Did you insert Facebook Javascript on footer.php? This could be an explanation if you see the button only with Social Ring active.

    I installed social ring and have the shortcode inserted right at the bottom right of the webpage (footer). When click on the FB Like, the pop out is out of screen. Is there anyway to solve this?

      Unfortunately there’s no way to change the position of the popup because it’s managed Facebook side.

      Hi, actually the language depends on translation files. Which language do you need? I’ll add it to the next version. I’ll translate only Facebook JS, because unfortunately I know only Italian and English.

    Al momento non mi segnala alcun errore, sono non lo trovo nella parte settings per poterlo configurare e non compare sul blog…
    Ieri non ho fatto altro che disabilitare tutti i plugin attivi, aggiornare e riattivarli tutti… Ho fatto qualcosa di sbagliato?

      Attivando e disattivando il plugin le impostazioni vengono cancellate. Non vedi nel menu di amministrazione la voce social ring per la pagina di impostazioni?

            già fatto… ora riprovo… dici di provare a entrare sul server e cancellare tutto quello che trovo sotto la cartella plugin di “social ring” dopo averlo eliminato da wordpress o non cambia nulla?

            No, è lo stesso. Non ha senso che la pagina de menu di amministrazione non compaia… è la prima volta che sento di questo problema, il plugin funziona su molti WordPress 3.3.1. A meno che ci sia qualche plugin che entra in conflitto. Cosa utilizzi?

            Ora non mi disattiva più però… mi dice plugin disattivato e appare con il solito sfondino di quando non è attivato… poi ricarico la pagina dei plugin e lo trovo attivo…

            Al momento ho un problema anche con un altro plugin che non vuole disattivarsi e che mi mostra un paio di righe di errore… potrebbe essere quest’ultimo a creare problemi?

            L’unica cosa che mi vien da pensare è che qualcosa stia interferendo con l’aggiunta di pagine al menu di amministrazione. Prova a disattivare o eliminare tutti i plugin che non vengono dati come compatibili con WordPress 3.3

            mmm… dove trovo la compatibilità con wordpress 3.3.1? sulla pagina del sito di wordpress sotto plugin? Intendi la parte dove gli utenti votano se funziona o no o qualche cosa dichiarata dallo sviluppatore?

            La compatibilità è indicata nella sezione plugin di WordPress.org, guarda quella ufficiale, non quella votata. Poi svuota la cache del browser, svuota la cache di w3 e se ce l’ha di wp minify. Se nemmeno così funziona, prova a disattivare quelli non compatibili.

            Grazie del consiglio della cache… quella di w3 la facevo tutte le volte, ma non le altre 2… ora nella pagina plugin sono disattivati sia quello che mi dava noia che social ring…
            procedo a eliminarlo e a rinstallarlo e ti faccio sapere…

            Boh… ho fatto un po’ di prove… sia sul blog che ti ho inviato che su un altro di prova e non mi funziona lo stesso… non saprei che dirti su quale possa essere l’errore perché non mi dice nulla…

            Sono un pirla, scusami per il disturbo… pensavo fosse direttamente sotto il menù setting perché l’ho attivato tanto tempo fa e non ricordavo più dove fosse… Invece è a lato sotto settings ma non nel suo menù… non so se mi sono spiegato…

            Avrei un altro paio di domande: come mai ha perso tutte le impostazioni mentre gli altri plugin mi sembra che le abbiano mantenute tutte tranne quello che ora non è più compatibile?
            Che consigli di tenere come condivisione su Facebook?

            Si tratta di una scelta mia. In pratica se cancello le impostazioni durante la disattivazione, non lascio “sporcizia” sul database di chi lo disinstalla. Siccome ho in programma di estendere le funzionalità del plugin, se aumenteranno le impostazioni, probabilmente rimuoverò questa pulizia per evitare a chi lo riattiva di reinserire tutto.

            Per Facebook ti conviene tenere share e like. L’invio francamente non lo vedo molto utile.

    Il Plugin è grandioso,

    Unica cosa.. non riesco a convalidare le pagine dei post nel sito della nostra associazione calcistica, e gli unici errori si riferiscono esclusivamente al tuo plugin. Alcuni sono riusciti a correggerli apportando delle semplici modifiche al file library php e visto il richiamo ai meta open graph ho modificato anche il Doctype.
    Probabilmente non dovrei neache chiedertelo, ma provare non mi costa niente

    Hai qualche idea?

      Gli errori che vedo sono dovuti alle virgolette utilizzate nel doctype e nel tag html. Invece dei doppi apici (“”) sono state usate le virgolette (“”). MI potresti indicare quali sono gli errori di validazione che hai corretto nel plugin? così provvedo a sistemarli nella prossima versione.

    Ciao, complimenti per la plugin…tra tutte quelle provate è l’unica che non mi ha dato nessun tipo di errore ed è anche una delle più intuitive!!

    Ho solamente una domanda (mi scuso se la stessa è già stata fatta, ma leggendo sopra non l’ho trovata):

    se imposto in automatico l’inserimento dei bottoni nei post vengono aggiunti subito dopo il teso e graficamente non mi piace molto. forrei aggiungerci lo spazio ( ) e funziona…ma per farlo dovrei inserire manualemnte lo shortcode.

    è possible eseguire questo passaggio in automatico? oppure aggiungere allo script il codice di spazio?

      Nel file includes/library.php, intorno alla riga 70 trovi il codice CSS che gestisce le spaziature. Puoi modificare il margin della classe .social-ring, per esempio margin: 20 0 0 0;

    I really like the ease of your Social Ring plugin. Unfortunately, even though they are selected, no Facebook “Like” or “Send” buttons are showing up — only the “Share” button. Is the problem on the Facebook side?

      Open footer.php of your theme and search for function <?php wp_footer(); ?>. If you don’t find it, add it before body closure.

      Hi, I see that social buttons are placed on footer. The template tag must be placed inside the loop to work properly. If you place the tag outside, it can’t load the data (post title, post description, post image) needed by pin it button.

    Great work on this plugin! Much easier to use than others I have tried.

    Is it possible to change the thumbnail image when users press the Facebook Share button? It’s pulling a random image from one of my posts. I’d prefer to use a thumbnail image that I can define.

      Facebook should take the featured image of the post as thumbnail. If you don’t set the featured image, Facebook let you choose one of the image of the page.

          Il codice nelle pagine era corretto, infatti aspettando qualche giorno il problema si è risolto. Inspiegabilmente ogni tanto Facebook non riesce a leggere correttamente i meta inseriti appositamente per lui… Il like, così come anche lo share sono piuttosto ballerini.

    Nice plugin. It was working previously but I had a problem and had to re-install. Now the FB Share button won’t show correctly.

    It appears as some partially viewable text. I uploaded an image here:

    Also, currently I am unable to deselect the Facebook Like button in the settings. I uncheck the box and when I save the box returns to checked.

      Hi, you have to check file permissions of /wp-content/plugins/wordpress-social-ring/includes/share.php. Be sure they match your hosting provider requirements.

    I like the ease of your plugin, I have been trying all day to find one that works with my theme and design.

    I was wondering if there was a way to just have the buttons show up and not the counters next to the twitter and google + buttons (Until I get a lot more traffic coming through my site, I would rather just not have that data visible for others to see).

      Hi, you can activate social ring on posts by checking relative option on settings page. if buttons do not appear, post here a link to your blog.

        Settings is configured properly. All options (Home, Pages, Posts, Categories, Archive) are enabled. Tweet, FB Like/Share, g+1, PinIt showed on Homepage, Archive, Category except for the Threads. What could be the problem?

        Below the General Settings for Social Ring Plugin, it says something about post editor and insert [socialring]. Do I need to do this from WordPress or manually edit a configuration php file?

    Thank you for making such a wonderful plugin, it really is the best I have used to date so far.

    I was wondering if it would be possible to add a simple email option and icon? (whether you could instruct me as to how I might do that, or if you could introduce that at a later date?)

    A simple, mailto: would suffice, and using the excerpt as the subject, along with the link for the post.

    But is the Pinterest option limited to pinning only the first image in the blog post? Or, like some of the other “Pin it” plugins, can your “Pin-it” option allow the user to select any of the images on the entire page to pin?

    It’s been a very long while since I’ve done any coding, and I’ve been lucky that there are great developers to do the coding. Anyway, what setting could I change to get the buttons closer together? They look really funky with that much space between them while the pinterest buttons jumps to the second line.

    Great plugin and thanks for making it!

    I have one little issue. On some of my sites, I can’t get it not to show on homepage even though settings are correct – it keeps appearing. It would be great if we could just turn off the plugin for some pages.

    I installed the plugin, but when someone clicks on the fb “like” icon…the image that shows up is one I don’t want to represent my busines. Is there anyway to make my logo show up when someone clicks on “like” button on homepage or elsewhere?

    I’m trying to get the social ring buttons to show on my category archive pages, and I’ve checked off all the boxes in the settings, but it still doesn’t show. Do you know what could be the problem?
    The buttons show on my “posts” pages but not on category archives.
